While falling down one of those YouTube Rabbit holes, I stumbled across a video that gave me a knot in my stomach. There was a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live the other night where his crew asks random people walking on the street questions. Hilarious responses usually follow.
According to a study by the PEW Research Center, 1 in 4 Americans has not read a book in the past year. That’s an astounding statistic.
So, passersby were asked to name any book title. What was even more crazy than the statistic were the answers some of these people said. Most could not think of any book they have read. Now, I understand, being put on the spot and not being able to think of something. However, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed at those who just laugh and say “I don’t read books.”

At least Dr.Seuss is mentioned by multiple folks. That’s somewhat reassuring, I suppose.
Please don’t let this be the generation that just doesn’t read books. Books are the closest thing we have to real magic. There are stories that just leave an impact on your life and on your heart.
I’ll leave it to Mr. Ernest Hemingway who said “There is no friend as loyal as a book”

The last book I read that left an impact was Beneath a Scarlet Sky which I read last summer and am eagerly awaiting its arrival as a mini series staring Tom Holland.
I agree with your reaction to the video. Definitely need to set down the screen and spend more time reading! I know they also likely edited it so people who did give an answer were not shown because that would have been less tv worthy, so I can only hope that they did manage to stop more people who can name something.

Awesome! And yes, they probably did edit out the people that actually named a book title. I just hate when people awkwardly laugh and say “I don’t read books” seriously? What do you mean you don’t read books?

I cannot imagine my life without books. How about ? Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen; The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling; Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë: Hawaii by James Mitchener; All Creatures Great and Small by James Harriot; No.1 ladies Detective Agency series, or the 44 Scotland Street series by Alexander McCall Smith; I Know why the Caged Birds Sing by Maya Angelou; Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston … I imagine I could go on, but the thing is best said by Thomas Jefferson “I cannot live without books”.
