NaNoWriMo: Facing Disappointment and Almost Defeat

This is becoming a miserable attempt at NaNoWriMo.

Frankly, I’m feeling disappointed. In myself and letting you guys down.

Life and work got too busy and I wanted to find the time last week, and I just couldn’t.

Unfortunate events really knocked me down.

Not going to make excuses, I dropped the ball this year.

If this blog is about the ups and downs of me being a writer, guess this is one of those downs. Maybe NaNoWriMo isn’t for me? Ugh, I hate saying that.

Sorry all the NaNo hype didn’t live up to expectations. Life is tough sometimes, huh?

And when things get tough, I’m lucky to have someone to lean on.

In a moment of defeat, my better half gave me some encouraging words, while buying me Chinese takeout.

“The whole point of this month was to get you to write.”

He’s a keeper, isn’t he? When I’m a mess, my boyfriend always manages to put things into perspective and sets thing straight. He had a point though, the real goal of NaNoWriMo was to get the ball rolling on the novel I was nervously procrastinating to write. I’m thankful for that push of motivation that NaNo gave me.

So, all hope is not lost. There’s always time to keep writing, right?

I’m reworking my goals here, something more manageable. Finding the time for both my freelance writing and fiction writing will be a challenge, but it’s a challenge worth taking.  I may not make the deadline, but I will keep writing. And that’s whats important.

Guess we’ll see how November ends for me. Good luck to all the writers thriving in NaNoWriMo. Go on without me!

NaNoWriMo #18: Snowy Catch-Up Days

Here in New York, We’ve got our first dusting of snow the other day. It was actually more like a couple inches worth of snow. Starting to feel like Winter over here.

Sorry if I’ve been absent, I’ve been playing catch up these past couple days. Hovering around 15,000, I think. I know I’m incredibly behind now, but I’m still going to keep going.

Even though I’m behind word count wise, there is a bright side to taking a slower pace. I’ve noticed that scenes are arranging into place, and that’s pretty cool. Things look like they are coming together in my story, it’s exciting. If you’re participating in NaNoWriMo this year, keep on writing! Let your imagination be your guide! And just do your best!

It’s peddle to the metal in these last few weeks of November. As I’m writing this, I’m about to start another nightly writing session. Burning the midnight oil, as it were. Keep your fingers and toes crossed, lovelies, that something decent gets written.

How is NaNoWriMo treating you? You guys holding up okay? Any plot revelations? Or writer stress? Pour a glass of wine and talk to me in the comments.

NaNoWriMo Tag – Celebrating 100 Followers

NaNoWriMo2018

Today, I am celebrating 100+ followers with the NaNoWriMo Tag! Seemed fitting enough, it being National Novel Writing Month and all. Thank you to each and every one of you who follows this blog. I greatly appreciate your support. So, here it is, the NaNoWriMo tag!

1. How many years have you participated in NaNo?

This will be my second year participating in National Novel Writing Month. Last year was a rewarding experience, and I learned a lot about myself as a writer. Writing during the NaNoWriMo event has given me the push of motivation to write my novel.

2. Are you a planner, pantser, or plantser?

Most of my story and characters are planned out ahead of time. However, I do have some wiggle room to add scenes I didn’t initially plan for. Nothing is set in stone. During the writing process, things change, and that’s just fine. So, I’m like 80% a planner, and 20% pantser.

3. If you are a planner/plantser, what are the first story elements that you flesh out?

Because I am writing a mystery novel, one of the first things I have to consider is the case itself. What is the central mystery pulling everyone together? Is it a murder? A disappearance? So I need, at least, a vague idea of what mystery is being solved here.

Typically, I develop my characters first too. For me, characters drive the overall story. Like playing the Sims. I like to come up with the cast of multi layered characters and let them loose into the fictional world.

4. NaNo Forums? Do you use them?

No I don’t. Maybe I should…?

5. Writing Buddies? Do you prefer to write socially or alone?

I’m a firm believer that writers should support other writers. It’s the reason behind this blog. When I’m actually fiction writing, I usually write by myself. Actually, I have a hard time writing when someone’s peering over my shoulder. Puts too much pressure on me.

I like to think using the Lady Jabberwocky blog helps me connect with other writers.

6. Do you diligently write 1,667 words a day, or do you write in spurts?

At the moment, I’m writing in spurts. Some days, it’s a couple hundred words, other days it’s a little over 1,000. Despite being way behind word count wise, I am still trying to write every day, even if it’s only a little bit. Balancing work writing and fiction writing has been difficult, but I am determined to keep writing daily and to reach the 50,000 word goal.

7. Do you have a writing totem?

Not sure if it counts, but I have a photo book of pictures of Brooklyn in the 1920s. Looking at historical photos helps me connect to the setting I’m writing about. Also, my boyfriend thinks I need my hair in a messy bun to write. Which is true. Maybe that’s my writing totem too.

8. Do you go to kick-off, write-in, or wrap-up parties?

I’ve never been to one, no. But I have considered going to a write-in, if it was close to where I live. Events like that sound like fun.

9. When writing, are you an analog (handwritten) or digital writer? Does the same apply to when you’re taking notes or brainstorming?

I am a digital writer, I write solely on my laptop. In terms of notes, I have sticky notes posted around my room, when I want to quickly jot down ideas . However, I do have some notes on my computer too. But mostly, I stick to post-it notes for brainstorming. My wall is starting to look like something out of a crime movie, all I need is the red string and newspaper clippings. “It all makes sense! Everything is connected!”

10. Share your NaNo username (if you feel comfortable doing so) so that others can connect with you on the NaNo site!

You can find me at LadyJabberwocky on the NaNo website. Feel free to add me as a writing buddy, if you like.

I just want to thank you guys again for all your support. I never thought I’d hit 10 followers, let alone 100. Truly, I appreciate every follow and comment. You lovely people inspire me everyday to keep writing.

NaNoWriMo Day 12: Legend Stan Lee on Writing Characters

Frankly, I’ve been having a bit of writer’s block lately. Past bad habits are rearing their ugly, distracting heads. Currently, I’m hovering around 11-12,000 words. I’m not really counting, at the moment. Just trying to keep writing, keep some momentum going.

On a sad note, I just heard the news that Stan Lee has passed away. He was truly a legend. He brought life and creativity into everything he worked on. As a writer, I admired him very much and he will greatly be missed.

A couple months ago, I found this snippet of an interview with Stan Lee. He was talking about where his characters come from during the writing process. I thought it was an insightful look into the mind of an amazing creator. How an author’s life influences the way they create characters and make them real. Here’s a brief excerpt from the clip:

“…I’m sure that every writer who writes any character… is taking this character from experiences he’s had, from people he’s known, from other things he’s read. Everything we experience is somehow stored in our mind. Even if you have a horrible memory like I do, it’s still somewhere in your subconscious….”

If you’re interested, check out the full clip. In the midst of a stint of writer’s block, he inspires me to keep writing from the heart.

Rest in peace to a real-life superhero, Stan Lee.

NaNoWriMo #8: Balancing Work Writing and Fiction Writing

Just about to reach 8,000 words.

I know I’m super behind now, which frankly, is disappointing. This Lady really needs a few days to catch up and just write thousands of words in one burst. One can only hope, right? Actually, I have a theory, that towards the end of the month will be crunch time and I’ll write a bunch of words. Pressure makes diamonds, and I’m the kind of writer who will get work done right before a project is due, until the very last minute. Am I the only one who does that?

This week, I was busy with life and other writing projects. From the get go, I knew this was going to be a challenge for me. Juggling work writing and NaNoWriMo writing. For those of you who are new to this blog, I write for an awesome website, ComicsVerse.com and do weekly comic book reviews and articles. Also, I am a freelance writer on Fivver . Plus, I have this blog to write for, which is a labor of love.

Despite having a couple writing assignments this week, I’m going to keep pushing forward, slowly but surely. Not even gonna obsessively count how many words I’ve written. I’m not going to complain about my work responsibilities. I just need to keep writing. Hopefully, I can use my non-existent time management skills to find time for everything.

NaNoWriMo Day #5: Weekend Distractions

Update; I’m creeping up on 6,000 ish words.

Despite still being behind word count wise, I’m going to take my own advice and not worry about the numbers and just write.

But good news, I feel like the ball is starting to roll and gain momentum. Which is an encouraging feeling.

The weekend came with many distractions.

Like a sale on nerdy sweaters I couldn’t resist.

And a pile of thick cut, french fries that I had to devour.

Meanwhile, in a string of bad luck, everything around me is breaking.

My glasses broke. The lens popped out and then went missing.

My desk chair broke. And for the record, I’m not 800 pounds, I’m very tiny. The chair was just old, and decided to give out during National Novel Writing Month.

Went to the library to do some writing. Instead of peace and quiet, there were a bunch of little boys running around, playing computer games and cursing at each other. Is it just me or does colorful language sound so strange coming from a ten year old? Never heard a kid call another kid’s mom a “double bitch.” Maybe it’s a gamer thing.

Anyways, despite all that, I’m going to keep writing and keep this story going. One way or another. I’m beginning to get in the habit of writing daily. Be proud of the little accomplishments.

Hopefully, I can pack in a lot more words today, Day Five. We’ll see what happens.

What’s been your biggest distraction so far? How’s NaNoWriMo treating you guys? Let me know in the comments!

NaNoWriMo Day #2: Earning the Secret Noveling Badge at a Baby Shower

Thumb Under your desk. In a public bathroom stall. On a horse. If you’ve “noveled” someplace you probably shouldn’t have, give yourself this badge.

Okay.

So, I knew I wasn’t going to get much writing done on Day Two. I had a baby shower to go to. A party for my boyfriend’s father’s best friend’s son’s pregnant girlfriend. Couldn’t make this up even if I tried. How I even got invited to this baby shower is still a mystery to me.

Anyways, no judging, but it wasn’t the most exciting baby shower. The mother-to-be didn’t even get around to opening presents. And there were no games like “measure the belly” or “guess how many diapers are in the jar” or whatever.

While hanging out with my boyfriend’s family was fun, and while all things baby made my biological clock wiggle, I still needed something to pass the time. So, I may have done some NaNoWriMo writing on my phone, next to blue balloons and confetti and a very curious boyfriend who kept trying to sneak a peak at my work. I only got about 700-800 words done on Day Two. Which means I’m already behind, but I’m planning to do some catching up on Day Three.

Does writing at a baby shower count as secret noveling? What badges have you earned? And how is NaNoWriMo treating you guys so far?

NaNoWriMo Day #1: “Where Do I Even Start?”

I’ll admit, it’s a slow start. Really does feel like the first day of school after a long, lazy summer. Feels a lot like last year, when I started NaNoWriMo 2017.

Not going to lie, but I did have a moment where I was like “Fudge, where do I even start?” I have a bad habit of trying to tackle everything at once. Don’t worry, I’m working on it. I do have about 2,000 words so far. I’m hoping to get back into the rhythm of writing daily soon. Starting a new routine is always challenging.

Even though there’s first day jitters, I’m committed to the reaching the 50,000 word goal.

Good luck to all the writers participating in NaNoWriMo.
