NaNoWriMo 2020 – A Slow Start (Week One)

Hello writer bees!

Hope everyone has had a productive start to National Novel Writing Month. I’ve been following a bunch of amazing writers on Twitter, reading their excerpts and praising their impressive word counts. Seriously, some of you are incredibly talented and really crushing November. Hats off to you folks. You are doing great!

Unfortunately, I’ve had a slow beginning to NaNoWriMo.

Of course I got super sick the first weekend of November. Of course I did. While everyone else got a jumpstart on writing, I was curled up with cramps all weekend. And then, when I started to feel better, the election happened. (And kept happening.)

I don’t know about you all, but I’ve been a bundle of stress and anxiety for the past couple days. Between NaNo and this seemingly never-ending election alone, my brain is fried.

However, I’m trying to make up for lost time. Writing during lunch breaks at work and after hours. I’ve added a few thousand to my overall wordcount. Maybe about 3,000 words this week? Not a big leap, but hey, progress is progress. Sticking with my untraditional goals, nothing has been deleted, no matter how badly I want to. Plus, that twinkle of motivation is returning to my work, which is what NaNoWriMo is all about, right?

Yes, It’s been a slow start for me. I have not given up yet. Slowly but surely, this WIP will get finished. Eventually. Shout out to my lovely boyfriend for being supportive and providing snacks during this crazy time. I plan to spend this weekend doing some writing sprints, boost my word count up and workshop some new ideas for scenes. That’s the hope anyway. Cross your fingers for me.

  1. Remember- this is supposed to be fun. I had it all planned out then work dropped a bomb on my the first week of November and now that it’s the 7th there’s no way and I’m not putting that pressure on myself right now. Also never believe what you see on the internet. They might have put down 20,000 words so far but guess what? How many of those words are actually usable? Did they take days off to just write? there are other factors at work here. And be sure to update your word count here and be proud you put words to page! Good luck!

  2. Sorry to hear you were sick going into NaNoWriMo. It’s definitely a handicap for creative endeavors. Don’t let national events mess with your hear too much. We’re all in this for the long haul and its up to all of America to make it a nation that can weather the real storms that come against us. I’ve been writing as part of this year’s NaNo event just because it came at a good time. I over-revised my current WIP and wasn’t having fun anymore. I had the seed of an idea bouncing around and NaNo gave it the soil to get to it. Happy Writing or just thinking about writing!

  3. Very sorry to hear you were unwell going into NANOWRIMO but I do enjoy reading your posts about how you’re getting through it 🙂 I say celebrate everything you do to move forward – you seem to have the most important thing which is focus 🙂 This is my first ever NANOWRIMO and I really wasn’t sure about what to do, to begin with so I just started writing. It’s more of a test-phase to see if I can stick to the word count and achieve the final goal. It is exciting anticipating whether or not I’ll make it but reading about other writers and their endeavours is a huge part of that process. So thank you for sharing 🙂 I look forward to more of your posts 😀

  4. Progress is progress! Life is always going to get in the way but as long as you keep going, and keep making that choice to show up and write then YOU WILL GET THERE! I believe in you and you got this, no matter what. Even if you don’t meet the exact goals you planned on you still did something. Something always wins out over nothing. Always. Keep writing! To give you perspective I legit only wrote 3 words today. Just 3. It was a long day so I’m tired but I know I will show up tomorrow and keep going at that word count. No matter what. Keep writing!! I’ll keep cheering you on!! 😀 ❤

  5. Any progress is still worth celebrating, especially when life throws you a curveball (or several!) Thank you for sharing this insight into your journey so far.

Plus, that’s a very cute snail.
